Programme description
Karstology 3rd level programme comprises 3 years of doctoral study programme. It is meant for:
- students of natural sciences or related spheres (for example geography) who proved above-average results during the first and second level of study and who are oriented to scientific research work;
- management and other workers (pedagogical) with suitable high-school education and who wish to be acquainted with karst more in detail.
The programme is entirely carried out at Postojna at the Karst Research Institute, Scientific Research Centre SAZU (Ljubljana) which is one of the founders of the University in Nova Gorica. The experts, employed at the Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU, foreign professors and lecturers from other Slovene scientific and educational institutions take an active part in the study programme.
Admission requirements
To qualify for entry into the graduate program Karstology, applicants must satisfy the following admission requirements:
- have completed a 2nd cycle master’s study preogramme;
- have completed at least a four-year academic undergraduate programme accredited with 240 ECTS credits;
- have completed a specialization after previously finished professional study programme, and had passed additional study obligations within 30 to 60 ECTS credit points;
- have completed an equivalent program abroad;
If the number of applicants exceeds the 15 available slots, they are selected based on previous academic achievement.
Educational and professional goals
The main objects of the Karstology programme are:
- to give an opportunity on doctoral level of the most quality achievement of knowledge based on intellectual exchange among Slovene and foreign university teachers, researchers and students, active in the sphere of karstology.
- to save the achieved knowledge related to karst, in particular the one attained on the Slovene karst and correspondingly deepen it by help of our and foreign experts, adequate literature and field work on our and on karst abroad in order to overcome the knowledge of conventional disciplines by the interdisciplinary approach.
- to stimulate independent, critical, reflexive and creative analysis and synthesis both of karst phenomena and theories and hypotheses. Practical working experiences, work in laboratory and in the field will be the components of the education processes uniting different methods and approaches of modern project researches, from clear asking of crucial questions to inventive presentation and application of research results.
- to give students the opportunity to become acquainted with historical cognitions and leading theories, notions and concepts of karst. The students recognize the interrelated processes and karst features and phenomena as well as human impact on karst in its widest sense.
- to educate doctors of science who are capable to make a quick and reliable analysis and synthesis of acquired knowledge and to represent it adequately, both oral or written in a form of articulated, reasonable, analytical and synthetical, scientific, professional and popular publications.
- to educate doctors of science who should be capable to constructively use the acquired interdisciplinary knowledge related to karstology at their future work within or outside the research institutions and university centres both in Slovenia and abroad.
