Ajdovščina

Ajdovščina has about 7000 inhabitants. It is the largest city in the Vipava valley. The city has an extremely rich and diverse history that goes back to 3rd century A.D. At that time the Romans had built a settlement with the name Ad Fluvidum Frigidum (At The Cold River). The settlement served as a road station on the way from Italy to Panonia and to the Balkans. An important event for Ajdovščina was in the year 451, when Atila on his way to Italy destroyed Castra - a military encampment with a wall battlement. From this time on, to the year 1507, we know little of the place, but in that year Caesar Maximilian I gave the area the rights of a market town. This greatly increased the speed of development in Ajdovščina.
An interesting combination of the first Roman buildings and later medieval buildings gives Ajdovščina its special appeal. In particular, the eastern city veduta with the renewed part of wall battlement, the tower and into the wall battlement included renaissance castle arcades. At the base of the building of the new market and in the small square in front of it a visitor can see how the old Roman baths looked.
On the left bank of river Hubelj is Šturje. This area has been a separate settlement and has its own unique characteristics. The buildings were built around the church of St. Gussepe and the centre creates a square of uneven sites. Into this square the short and long, narrow streets converge. An interesting feature here are the picturesque facades, small courtyards and squares with specific architectural and stone details. The hamlet, Trnje, is of interest too, because it managed to preserve the peculiar tloris arrangement, typical of the local settlements.
The architectural and historical monuments are only a part of what Ajdovščina offers today to its visitors. It also has a sports airfield, a sports hall and sports playgrounds, a great painter - Veno Pilon, a gallery and tourist events that occur every year. Ajdovščina is also the birthplace of important Slovenian artists; apart from Veno Pilon, the writer Danilo Lokar and the painter Anton Cebej. Ajdovščina also has a highly developed secondary industry, a wood industry, a textile industry and a building industry.
In Ajdovščina on the 5th of May 1945 the first Slovenian government was established. Bratina Hall, where the session took place, was later renovated and converted into a cinema. A plaque on the building is a record of this important event for Slovenia . Beside it is an axonometric map of the city with the late antique wall battlements.
